Vietnamese Age Calculator

Vietnamese age is called Tuổi Mụ or Tuổi Ta in Vietnamese tradition. Unlike the Western system where a newborn is counted as zero years old, in Vietnam a baby is considered one year old at the moment of birth. This is because Vietnamese tradition counts the months spent in the womb as the first year of life.

The second key difference is that Vietnamese age increases on Tet, the lunar new year, not on individual birthdays. This means everyone in Vietnam ages together on the same day every year. A person born in December can become two years old just a few weeks later when Tet arrives in January or February.

The formula is simple. Vietnamese Age equals Current Year minus Birth Year plus one. So if someone was born in 1995 and the current year is 2024, their Vietnamese age is 2024 minus 1995 plus 1 which equals 30.

Age holds deep cultural importance in Vietnamese society due to Confucian values. Older people receive higher respect and the Vietnamese language itself changes based on the age difference between two people. When Vietnamese people meet someone new they often ask about birth year rather than current age because birth year immediately tells them the social position and level of respect to show.

Modern Vietnam uses both systems. Legal documents, official records, and professional settings follow the international Western age system. But within families and during cultural celebrations like Tet, the traditional Vietnamese age is still widely used and respected.
