About Generations
What Is a Generation — and How Are They Defined?
A generation is a group of people born within a specific range of years who share broadly similar formative experiences — the same historical events, cultural shifts, economic conditions and technological changes during their childhood and young adulthood. These shared experiences shape common attitudes, values and behaviors that distinguish one generation from the next.
Generation boundaries are not fixed by law or science — they are sociological constructs refined over time by researchers, demographers and cultural observers. The most widely cited framework in the English-speaking world comes from the Pew Research Center, which bases generation breaks on when the earliest members came of age, faced major historical turning points, or were shaped by distinctly different formative environments.
"Generations are not destiny — they are context. Knowing your generation is not a personality test. It is a framework for understanding the historical and cultural environment that shaped your early worldview."
Why Generation Boundaries Are Approximate
Someone born in 1996 and someone born in 1997 grew up in virtually identical circumstances — yet the first is technically a Millennial and the second is Gen Z. This is why researchers acknowledge cusper or micro-generation zones at every boundary — people who genuinely straddle two generational identities. The most discussed is the Zillennial zone (approximately 1993–1998) shared between late Millennials and early Gen Z.

Silent Generation
Born 1928–1945 · Ages 80–97 today
Born into economic hardship and world war, the Silent Generation was taught to work within the system rather than challenge it — hence the name. They came of age in the 1950s conformist culture, and many became the civil rights leaders and activists who quietly changed the world.

Generation X
Born 1965–1980 · Ages 45–60 today
Sandwiched between two massive generations, Gen X grew up as the "latchkey kids" — often left unsupervised, they developed fierce independence and a healthy skepticism of institutions. They witnessed the fall of the Berlin Wall, the rise of personal computers and the AIDS crisis, and are known for adaptability and pragmatism.

Millennials (Generation Y)
Born 1981–1996 · Ages 29–44 today
Millennials came of age during the digital revolution, 9/11, the 2008 financial crisis and the rise of social media. Born in 1995, you are a Millennial (Generation Y) — the generation born between 1981 and 1996. However, people born between approximately 1993 and 1998 are sometimes called Zillennials — a micro-generation at the cusp of Millennials and Gen Z who share traits from both groups. You grew up with early internet and social media but remember life before smartphones.
Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. Gen Z were born between 1997 and 2012. If you were born in 1996 you are the youngest Millennial; if you were born in 1997 you are the oldest Gen Z. People born in the 1995–1998 range are often called Zillennials — experiencing both generational identities and not fully relating to either stereotype.
Generation Alpha comes after Gen Z. Gen Alpha includes everyone born from 2013 onward — the children of Millennials and the youngest generation currently being tracked by researchers. They are the first generation born entirely in the 21st century and are growing up as the most technology-immersed and globally connected generation in history.
Generation boundaries are sociological constructs, not scientific laws. Different researchers, organizations and media outlets use slightly different cutoff years. The Pew Research Center, McCrindle Research and others each use their own methodology. Most mainstream definitions agree on the core years but may differ by 1–3 years at the boundaries. Our calculator uses the most widely cited Pew Research Center definitions.
Zillennial is an informal term for people born roughly between 1993 and 1998 — at the cusp of Millennials and Gen Z. Zillennials remember life before social media but came of age with smartphones. They grew up with both analog and digital childhoods, giving them a unique dual perspective that does not perfectly fit either the Millennial or Gen Z stereotype.
