Why the Multiply by 7 Rule Is Wrong
The 7x rule oversimplifies aging in two critical ways. First, it ignores the fact that dogs age fastest in their first two years โ reaching full sexual maturity, adult body size, and social development by 12 to 18 months. Second, it completely ignores breed size. A 10-year-old Chihuahua and a 10-year-old Great Dane are in very different life stages. Why Large Dogs Age Faster Than Small Dogs
One of the most fascinating facts about dogs is that larger breeds age significantly faster than smaller ones. A Chihuahua can live 15 to 20 years while a Great Dane typically lives only 7 to 10 years. The underlying reason appears to be related to growth rate โ larger dogs grow faster during puppyhood, and this accelerated growth is associated with faster cellular aging throughout life. The Six Life Stages of a Dog
