What Is the Bikram Sambat Calendar?
The Bikram Sambat (BS) โ also written Vikram Samvat โ is the official national calendar of Nepal and one of the oldest calendars still in active daily use anywhere in the world. Named after the legendary Indian king Vikramaditya, the BS calendar runs approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar.

How the BS Calendar Differs from the Gregorian Calendar
The most important structural difference is the Nepali New Year. While the Gregorian year begins on January 1st, the Bikram Sambat year begins on Baisakh 1 โ which falls in mid-April, typically between April 13 and April 15 each year. This means that for roughly the first three and a half months of every Gregorian year (January to mid-April), Nepal is still in the previous BS year.
A second major difference is month length. Gregorian months follow a nearly fixed pattern (28โ31 days). BS months vary between 29 and 32 days and the exact length of each month differs year to year, making precise BS date conversion require a lookup table rather than a simple formula.
Why Your Nepali Age May Differ from Your International Age
Because the Nepali New Year falls in mid-April, people born between January 1 and mid-April have a BS birth year that is 56 years ahead of their Gregorian birth year. People born after mid-April have a BS birth year that is 57 years ahead. This means your Nepali age in BS years is the same number as your Gregorian age โ the calendar year numbers are just shifted forward by 56 or 57.
