Bikram Sambat Explained

What Is the Bikram Sambat Calendar?

The Bikram Sambat (BS) โ€” also written Vikram Samvat โ€” is the official national calendar of Nepal and one of the oldest calendars still in active daily use anywhere in the world. Named after the legendary Indian king Vikramaditya, the BS calendar runs approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar.

In Nepal, Bikram Sambat is not merely a cultural relic โ€” it governs everyday life. Government offices, courts, schools, banks, newspapers and official documents all use BS dates. When a Nepali citizen applies for a citizenship certificate, driving licence or passport, their date of birth is recorded in BS. Understanding your BS age is therefore practically important for any interaction with the Nepali government system.

"Nepal is one of the few countries in the world where the national official calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar used internationally. Every Nepali citizen has two ages โ€” their Gregorian age and their Bikram Sambat age."

How the BS Calendar Differs from the Gregorian Calendar

The most important structural difference is the Nepali New Year. While the Gregorian year begins on January 1st, the Bikram Sambat year begins on Baisakh 1 โ€” which falls in mid-April, typically between April 13 and April 15 each year. This means that for roughly the first three and a half months of every Gregorian year (January to mid-April), Nepal is still in the previous BS year.

A second major difference is month length. Gregorian months follow a nearly fixed pattern (28โ€“31 days). BS months vary between 29 and 32 days and the exact length of each month differs year to year, making precise BS date conversion require a lookup table rather than a simple formula.

Approximate BS Year = Gregorian Year + 56 (before mid-April) Approximate BS Year = Gregorian Year + 57 (after mid-April Nepali New Year) โ†’ Exact conversion requires a BS calendar lookup table

Why Your Nepali Age May Differ from Your International Age

Because the Nepali New Year falls in mid-April, people born between January 1 and mid-April have a BS birth year that is 56 years ahead of their Gregorian birth year. People born after mid-April have a BS birth year that is 57 years ahead. This means your Nepali age in BS years is the same number as your Gregorian age โ€” the calendar year numbers are just shifted forward by 56 or 57.

The 12 Months of the Bikram Sambat Calendar

Each of the 12 BS months has a Nepali name, a Sanskrit root and a corresponding Gregorian period. Unlike Gregorian months, BS months have variable day counts that change each year.

Bikram Sambat vs Other Asian Calendars

Nepal's Bikram Sambat is unique among Asian calendar systems โ€” it is solar-based like the Gregorian calendar, but with a different epoch and variable month lengths.

Why Nepali Age in BS Matters

For Nepali citizens, knowing your Bikram Sambat age is not optional โ€” it is practically essential for daily life and official interactions.

Official Documents and Government Records

All Nepali government documents โ€” citizenship certificates (เคจเคพเค—เคฐเคฟเค•เคคเคพ), birth certificates, school leaving certificates, driving licences and voter ID cards โ€” record dates of birth in Bikram Sambat. When you apply for a passport (which uses Gregorian dates for international travel), the government cross-references your BS birth date from your citizenship certificate. Knowing your exact BS birth date and age is essential for all official processes in Nepal.

Nepali New Year โ€” Baisakh 1

Baisakh 1 (Nava Barsha / เคจเคต เคตเคฐเฅเคท) is Nepal's national New Year โ€” celebrated with festivals, family gatherings and public holidays across the country. It falls in mid-April of the Gregorian calendar, typically April 13 or 14. This date marks the beginning of a new BS year and is one of the most culturally important days in the Nepali calendar.

Religious and Astrological Use

Hindu religious observances, festival dates, auspicious occasion planning (muhurat) and traditional Nepali astrology (jyotish) all operate on the Bikram Sambat calendar. Wedding dates, naming ceremonies and religious rites are selected based on BS dates โ€” making the BS calendar integral to the religious and social fabric of Nepali life.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Bikram Sambat (BS) is Nepal's official national calendar, running approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the Gregorian calendar. Nepal has used it as the official calendar since the country's unification. All government documents, legal records and official dates in Nepal use BS. The calendar is rooted in the Hindu solar tradition and is closely tied to Nepal's national and religious identity.
In 2025 AD, Nepal's Bikram Sambat year is 2082 BS (after the Nepali New Year in mid-April) or 2081 BS (before the New Year). The BS year is approximately 56โ€“57 years ahead of the Gregorian year. The Nepali New Year (Baisakh 1) typically falls on April 13 or 14 each year.
Your Nepali age in years is usually the same number as your international age, because both count the number of completed years since birth. The difference is the calendar year numbers โ€” your BS birth year is 56 or 57 higher than your Gregorian birth year. However, because the Nepali New Year falls in mid-April, people born in January to mid-April may find their BS birthday falls in the previous BS year.
Unlike Gregorian months which are fixed, Bikram Sambat months vary between 29 and 32 days. This is because the BS calendar is a solar calendar that uses astronomical calculations to align months with solar positions. The Government of Nepal publishes an official BS calendar (patro) each year with the exact day counts for each month of that year.
The Nepali New Year is called Nava Barsha (เคจเคต เคตเคฐเฅเคท) or Nava Varsha. It falls on Baisakh 1 of the Bikram Sambat calendar, which corresponds to mid-April in the Gregorian calendar โ€” typically April 13 or 14. It is a national public holiday in Nepal celebrated with festivals, family gatherings and the exchange of New Year greetings.
