The Bikram Sambat calendar, officially abbreviated as वि.सं. in Nepali, is the national calendar of Nepal named after the legendary emperor Vikramaditya. It is approximately 56 years and 8 months ahead of the AD Gregorian year — meaning 2026 AD currently falls in 2082/2083 BS depending on the month. Every official Nepali document uses BS — citizenship certificates, birth certificates, land records, court documents, school certificates, and government correspondence.

Completed Age vs Running Age — Most Important for Lok Sewa

This is the most searched question among Nepali users — and the most critical for Lok Sewa Aayog applicants.

Completed Age (पूरा उमेर) — the number of full years you have lived. If you turned 24 last month, your completed age is 24.

Running Age (चल्दो उमेर) — the year of life you are currently living through. If you have completed 24 years and are now in your 25th year, your running age is 25.

The Twelve Months of Bikram Sambat

Unlike Gregorian months which have fixed lengths, BS months have either 29, 30, 31, or 32 days depending on the year — which is why manual BS-AD conversion is complex and error-prone. The twelve BS months in order are: Baisakh (बैशाख), Jestha (जेठ), Ashadh (असार), Shrawan (साउन), Bhadra (भदौ), Ashwin (असोज), Kartik (कार्तिक), Mangsir (मंसिर), Poush (पुष), Magh (माघ), Falgun (फागुन), and Chaitra (चैत). The BS new year begins on 1 Baisakh — celebrated as Naya Barsha (नयाँ वर्ष) in mid-April.

Why Nepali Age Matters for Official Documents

BS to AD Conversion — Why It Is Tricky

Converting between BS and AD is not as simple as adding or subtracting 57 years. The offset changes throughout the year — before Baisakh 1 the difference is 56 years, after Baisakh 1 it becomes 57 years. On top of that, BS months have variable lengths that change every year based on astronomical calculations.
