What Is Chronological Age?
Chronological age is the most objective, universally accepted measure of a person's age โ the exact amount of time that has elapsed since their date of birth, expressed in years, months and days. Unlike biological age, mental age or developmental age, chronological age is purely based on calendar time and cannot be changed or influenced by health, fitness or any other factor.
The term comes from the Greek word chronos (time). It is used as the gold standard reference point in child development assessments, medical calculations, legal age verification, educational placement, sports eligibility and insurance actuarial tables โ any context requiring a precise, standardized and objective measure of how long a person has been alive.

The Chronological Age Formula
Chronological age is calculated by subtracting the date of birth from a target date, then breaking the result into completed years, remaining months and remaining days:
Chronological Age = Target Date โ Date of Birth
โ Completed Years = number of full years elapsed
โ Remaining Months = full months after the last birthday
โ Remaining Days = days after the last full month
Example: DOB March 15, 1990 โ Target May 18, 2026 = 36 years, 2 months, 3 days
Why Months and Days Matter โ Not Just Years
For most adults, expressing age in whole years is enough. But in developmental, medical and educational contexts, the month and day components are critically important. A child assessed at "3 years 2 months" is developmentally in a very different stage from one at "3 years 11 months" โ even though both would simply say "I'm 3." Pediatricians, speech therapists, psychologists and educators always calculate and record chronological age to the nearest month for this reason.

Corrected Age for Premature Babies
For premature infants, healthcare providers often use corrected chronological age (also called adjusted age) rather than the actual birth date. A baby born 8 weeks early has a chronological age of, say, 6 months from birth โ but their corrected age is only 4 months (6 months minus 8 weeks). Developmental milestones, growth charts and feeding assessments are evaluated against the corrected age, not the birth date, typically until the child is 2 years old.
To calculate corrected age: enter the actual birth date in the Date of Birth field, then subtract the number of weeks premature from the result. Alternatively, use the due date as the "date of birth" for a rough corrected age estimate.
