Little League International uses a specific age determination date that is the same across all affiliated leagues worldwide, ensuring fair and consistent division placement for every child.

What Is Little League Age and How Is It Determined?

Little League age — also called "league age" — is not the same as your child's current actual age. For Baseball, a player's league age is their age as of August 31 of the current playing year. So for the Spring and Summer 2026 seasons, the cutoff is August 31, 2026. If your child turns 10 in September 2026, their league age for Spring 2026 is still 9 — because they will not yet be 10 on August 31. For Softball, the age determination date is different: it is the player's age as of December 31 of the previous year. For the 2026 softball season, the cutoff is December 31, 2025.

Little League Baseball Divisions Explained

Tee Ball (League Ages 4–7) is the entry point. Children hit from a stationary tee. The focus is entirely on fundamentals — gripping a bat, tracking a ball, running bases, and having fun. Minor League (League Ages 5–11) covers coach pitch, machine pitch and player pitch levels. This is where core mechanics of batting, fielding and throwing develop in a progressively competitive environment.

Major Division (League Ages 9–12) — commonly called "Majors" — is the flagship division of Little League Baseball. This is full-pitch baseball with real competition and All-Star eligibility. Intermediate (50/70) Division (League Ages 11–13) uses a 50-foot pitching distance and 70-foot base paths as a bridge to the larger high school diamond. Junior League (Ages 12–14) and Senior League (Ages 13–16) are played on full 90-foot diamonds, directly preparing players for high school baseball.

Why the Cutoff Date Matters So Much

The age determination cutoff is one of the most consequential administrative details in youth sports. A child born in September who misses the August 31 baseball cutoff will be placed in a younger division alongside children who could be nearly a full year younger. This "relative age effect" is well-documented in sports science — children born just after a cutoff date are often larger, more physically mature and more athletically experienced than their same-division peers born just before the cutoff. Over time this creates measurable advantages in skill development and selection for All-Star teams and competitive play.
